    About Plant In Construction

"Plant" in construction refers to equipment or machinery used for construction and industrial purposes. This is typically heavy machinery used on construction sites but can also be smaller-handled personal machinery such as abrasive wheels or mobile access towers.

Plant operators, or those looking to operate plants, are required to have the appropriate plant training for the machinery they operate. This can either be NPORS- or CPCS-accredited. This training will give candidates a competence card that they can use to show their qualification for operating that type of plant or machinery.

We provide support, assessments, and training for plant NVQs and the National Plant Operator Registration Scheme (NPORS).

We partner with carefully selected training partners to offer nationwide CPCS training and testing. If this is your preferred card scheme, then please enquire about potential dates and prices.

If you are unsure of how to enter the plant schemes, upgrade, or renew, please contact Workforce Skills Support for further information and advice.

A CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) Card is a competency card for those operating plants and working in construction environments. The card is not a legal requirement; however, it shows the worker's competence and may be a requirement for certain construction sites to ensure a safe working environment.

CPCS & NPORS CSCS Affiliated Cards are equal in qualification level; however, CPCS has been established for a longer period, meaning that it is known by more construction sites. Despite this, NPORS is still an acceptable card scheme to prove competence and knowledge when operating plants.

    cpcs trained operator card

The CPCS Red Card, also known as the Trained Operator Card, is a card offered by the CPCS for those who are at the beginning of their career in plant operation. It enables an individual to work in their chosen field (under supervision) while they complete the relevant NVQ or other relevant vocational qualification.

    cpcs blue competent operator

The Blue CPCS Competent Operator Card is an ID and competence card provided by the CPCS that demonstrates that an individual has met certain health and safety requirements and that they are qualified in their occupation as a plant worker.

You can check your CPCS card using the CPCS card checker below.

NPORS is one of the UK’s leading accreditation and registration bodies, working across numerous sectors, including construction. We are an accredited training provider (ATP), providing training and assessment under the NPORS accreditation.

We have a team of qualified and experienced instructors who follow the NPORS-approved course syllabus. This training and testing is carried out at suitable premises, which can be a specific area at an employer’s premises.

An NPORS (National Plant Operator Registration Scheme) card is a CSCS-affiliated competence card for those operating plants and working in construction environments. The card is not a legal requirement; however, it shows the worker's competence and may be a requirement for certain construction sites to ensure a safe working environment.

Workforce Skills Support is an NPORS-accredited centre. We cover NPORS plant operators across a multitude of sectors and issue construction-specific cards bearing the CSCS logo. As an accredited centre we deliver various categories for the NPORS theory and practical tests that under the NPORS scheme lead to Trained Operator and Competent Operator cards.

    npors red trained operator card

The NPORS-trained operator card is a CSCS-affiliated card. This can be obtained with a valid health, safety, & environment test for operatives (last 2 years from the date of the card claim) as well as completing the relevant theory and practical test for the associated plant machinery.

    npors competent operator

The NPORS Operator Card is a record of the training or assessment an individual has undertaken that proves their ability to safely operate an item of plant machinery or equipment. Registration with NPORS lasts for three or five years from the date of the first initial test. The duration of the card is dependent on whether you opt for CSCS Affiliated or NPORS Traditional.

You can check your NPORS card using the NPORS card checker below.

As an accredited centre, we deliver NVQ plant operation qualifications that are recognised by CPCS & NPORS, in turn allowing employers and candidates to apply for their CPCS and NPORS cards in line with the additional requirements set out by each scheme.
