The aim of the NPORS N003 Reach Lift Truck training course is to provide candidates with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to effectively and safely operate reach trucks to the NPORS (National Plant Operators Registration Scheme) standard.

Learning Outcomes

Here is a brief overview of the content of training.
  • A basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and responsibilities as plant operator.
  • A working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used.
  • Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions.
  • Be able to locate and identify steering, driving and braking controls and explain their functions.
  • Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufactures and legislative requirements.
  • Safely mount and dismount the machine.
  • Start and stop the engine and safely move the machine off and stop safely.
  • Configure the machine for travel and manoeuvre it safely laden and unladen, in open and confined areas.
  • Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area.
  • Manoeuvre the machine to the work area and correctly configure in readiness to carry out lifting and load handling tasks.
  • Carry out lifting and load handling tasks.
  • Lift and transfer loads accurately and safety at different locations.
  • Load and unload external transport safely.
  • Fit, adjust and or remove attachments.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation.
  • Carry out all end-of-shift shut down procedures.

Please note: There is a cap on how many times an employer can claim a short-duration course achievement grant. Check the CITB website for information on the number of claims allowed based on your last levy return.

If a candidate has been granted a grant for a particular course in their lifetime, they will not be eligible for grant again for the same course unless it has specific refresher standards published on the short-duration course register.

If refresher course standards do exist for a particular course, then only one refresher course is eligible in a lifetime for each candidate.

This highly interactive practical and classroom-based training course concludes with practical assessment and theory tests, demonstrating the candidate’s full understanding of the training.
Novice Operator: 5 Days, maximum of 3 candidates

Experienced Operator: 1 Day test only, maximum of 4 candidates

Location: Nationwide Delivery on-site
There are no formal prerequisites. However, candidates should have a basic understanding of English and be physically fit to operate machinery safely.
Topics include health and safety regulations, pre-use inspection, controls and instruments, maneuvering and driving, load handling, stacking and de-stacking, and practical operational skills.
Participants should wear appropriate work clothing, including safety boots. Some training providers may supply additional personal protective equipment (PPE) if required.

For entrants that wish to apply for the NPORS Traditional Card, there is no requirement to have an NVQ qualification. If the ‘HS&E TESTED Logo’ is required on the card, entrants must ensure they have attended and passed the CITB Operatives Health, Safety, and Environment Test within the two years prior to application for the card and will have to achieve, within 2 years, the relevant NVQ.
