The CPCS Piling Rig Training (A47) aims to provide thorough practical and theoretical training in operating the Piling Rig (bored below A47) at 20 tonnes and to enable the candidate to competently and safely carry out the role and pass the CPCS Theory and Practical Tests.

Learning Outcomes

Here is a brief overview of the content of training.
  • Describe the nature of the sector of industry and their role and responsibilities as a plant operator.
  • Name and explain the purpose of principle components, the basic construction, controls and terminology.
  • Confirm with Manufacturer’s requirements as per the operators handbook, other types of information source and the relevant regulations and legislation.
  • Undertake all pre-use plant checks.
  • Confirm and ready for travel.
  • Explain the procedures and precautions to be taken when travelling over rough, undulating ground.
  • Manoeuvre in confined spaces.
  • Position, configure and set for driven works.
  • Explain action required for hazards, underground and overhead services.
  • Accurately install displacement piles to completion.
  • Comply with signals and instructions.
  • Explain plant lifting requirements and limitations using a piling rig.
  • Carry out shut down and secure procedures.
  • Explain the de-rigging, loading and unloading procedures for machine transporting

If a candidate has been granted a grant for a particular course in their lifetime, they will not be eligible for grant again for the same course unless it has specific refresher standards published on the short-duration course register.

If refresher course standards do exist for a particular course, then only one refresher course is eligible in a lifetime for each candidate.

While it is not mandatory to have a CPCS card before attending the course, it is recommended. Participants will need to pass the Health, Safety, & Environment (HS&E) test within the last two years before taking the CPCS technical test.
Yes, the course includes both theoretical and practical components. Participants will have hands-on training with a piling rig and will be assessed on their operational skills.

To achieve the Red CPCS Trained Operator Card candidates must pass both the CSCS touch screen H+S test (within the last 2 years) and the CPCS Theory Test and the Practical Test.
