The NPORS N402 Slinger Signaler training course aims to provide the candidate with thorough practical and theoretical training and is aimed at people who want to gain entry into the lifting industry.

Learning Outcomes

Here is a brief overview of the content of training.
  • Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as a Slinger / Signaller
  • Be able to conform to manufacturers requirements as per technical data, conform to relevant regulations and legislation
  • Be able to locate, identify and explain different types of lifting equipment and lifting accessories. Explain their basic construction, uses, applications and their functions
  • Be able to interpret and extract information on all relevant documentation
  • Undertake all pre-use checks on non-specialist lifting accessories and identify non serviceable items
  • Explain procedures for placing non-serviceable items out-of-service
  • Identify and explain centres of gravity and calculate estimated weights of loads
  • Set up exclusion zone explaining actions required for emergency actions, identifying any overhead hazards
  • Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for Slinger / Signaller use
  • Secure various types of loads to a hook using the relevant lifting accessories and procedures ensuring load balance, security and integrity
  • Direct and guide the movement of loads to different types of location using different methods of communication
  • Environmental considerations
  • Carry out all out-of-service and securing procedures

Please note: There is a cap on how many times an employer can claim a short-duration course achievement grant. Check the CITB website for information on the number of claims allowed based on your last levy return.

If a candidate has been granted a grant for a particular course in their lifetime, they will not be eligible for grant again for the same course unless it has specific refresher standards published on the short-duration course register.

If refresher course standards do exist for a particular course, then only one refresher course is eligible in a lifetime for each candidate.

There are no specific entry requirements for the NPORS N402 course. However, it is recommended that participants have a basic understanding of site safety and lifting operations.
This highly interactive practical and classroom-based training course concludes with practical assessment and theory tests, demonstrating the candidate’s full understanding of the training.
Novice Operator: 2 Day, maximum of 3 candidates

Experienced Operator: 1 Day test only, maximum of 6 candidates

Location: Nationwide Delivery on-site
Participants are assessed through a combination of a written test and a practical demonstration. The written test evaluates the participant's understanding of the theoretical aspects, while the practical assessment tests their ability to safely perform slinging and signalling tasks.

For entrants that wish to apply for the NPORS Traditional Card, there is no requirement to have an NVQ qualification. If the ‘HS&E TESTED Logo’ is required on the card, entrants must ensure they have attended and passed the CITB Operatives Health, Safety, and Environment Test within the two years prior to application for the card and will have to achieve, within 2 years, the relevant NVQ.
