Course Information

The 1-day CITB temporary works supervisor course is for anyone who currently supervises or intends to supervise temporary works. This course is for those responsible for supervising all forms of temporary works during the installation, use, maintenance, and dismantling procedures.This course is not a general awareness course; its main focus is teaching the roles and responsibilities of the temporary works supervisor in compliance with BS 5975, the code of practice for temporary works.

Please note: this course alone does not prove competency as a temporary works supervisor. This comes from a mixture of skills, knowledge, training, and experience and should be judged by an appropriate individual.
Entry Requirements
As a training provider, it is our responsibility to determine whether a learner is appropriate to attend the course. Learners will need to complete an Accreditation of prior experiential learning form (APEL) before attending the course

What are the requirements?

CITB Courses can now be taken remotely allowing for candidates to undertake training online by working with their tutor in an online meeting in the same way they would in a classroom setting. CITB has also introduced remote courses where candidates can take training courses on their own using online resources.

  • The course must be accessed on a laptop or computer.

  • The Laptop or Computer must have a camera function. Delegates must be visible to the tutor throughout the course.

  • The Laptop or Computer requires a microphone and speakers to enable interaction between delegates, the tutor, and other delegates.

  • A second screen for your Laptop or Computer will be advantageous for accessing the course information (Not Mandatory).

  • Delegates that work for the same organisation can attend the course together, provided the course is accessed by individual laptops or computers and they can separate in to different locations to undertake the exam paper at the end of the course.

  • Access to reliable internet is an essential requirement and is the responsibility of each attendee.

  • You will require access to an email address to receive course materials and exercise documentation.

  • You MUST provide Photographic ID to the tutor at the start of the course, this must be the original Idenification and not a photocopy or photo (driver's license, passport, CSCS/CPCS Card etc.).   • Be able to access “Zoom Cloud Meetings” (a link to the meeting will be provided by the center).

  • You must complete and return the delegate information form prior to course attendance.

  • Electronic CITB mandatory publications will be e-mailed before the course; hardcopies may be available upon request (please enquire at the booking stage).

Temporary Works Supervisor – TWSTC Course Aims

The temporary works Supervisor training course will outline the key role of temporary works supervision and the management systems used to supervise temporary works while also ensuring that everything is operating safely and efficiently. The learners will be taught the importance of Communication, coordination, cooperation, and competency (The 4C’s), In addition to this, the course ensures that the learners are familiar with BS5975, which gives guidelines on controls for how temporary works should be managed and supervised effectively and the key role of temporary works supervision.

This course will cover 5 modules of temporary works risk management to assist you through the Planning, Design, and implementation stages, This will include identifying temporary works, preparing design briefs and establishing design check categories, Risk classification, permits, temporary works registers, design check certifications, and experience checks All this encompasses the role of Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS).

Learners should also have a working knowledge of current health and safety legislation. Those who have attended and passed a Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) or Site Managers Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course or relevant refresher will have gained the knowledge to meet the expectations of the course, but it’s not a mandatory requirement to have achieved the SMSTS or SSSTS to be able to attend this course.

No, if you currently hold a CITB temporary works supervisor qualification, to retain this, you will have to attend a one-day CITB temporary works supervisor training course again before the expiration of your current certificate, which lasts 5 years.

Yes, there is a mandatory end-of-course exam, plus you will be required to complete the mandatory exercises given to you by your tutor during the course. The tutor will also have to review your involvement during the course to ensure a full understanding of the temporary works management procedures.

Yes, you will receive a course workbook, which will provide you with all the details of temporary works management, including example templates of control documentation used in the management of temporary works. This is sent with your course registration information once you register for the course.

This training does not guarantee competence; we will provide you with the knowledge to be able to manage temporary works, but competence relies on skills, knowledge, and experience. Experience is gained over time in the position of supervisor. You should be supervised by an experienced person while undertaking these duties until relevant industry experience is achieved.

Yes, the course will cover the requirements from the perspective of the principal contractor (PC) or subcontractor.

This course can be done online from the comfort of any location, but it does rely on a reliable Wi-Fi connection. It is also recommended that the course be accessed remotely using a laptop and not a tablet or phone.

Yes, CITB offer a free online training course, which is the Temporary Works General Awareness Training Course (TWGATC). This free e-course will be live on February 20, 2023 and can be accessed via the link below:

Our tutors must meet the CITB requirements and be registered with CITB to be able to deliver this course and the tutor must hold the following accreditations:

  • Be a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE/FICE)

or

  • Be a member of the Institution of Structural Engineers (MIStructE/FIStructE)

or

  • Be a member of the Institution of Royal Engineers (InstRE)
  • Be registered with the Engineering Council

The Temporary Works Supervisor course is eligible for a Tier 1 Grant claim, this grant can only be claimed once per candidate per lifetime and the grant does not renew.
