About The Course

The director’s role in health & health safety is a one-day interactive course aimed at those in a director or senior manager role and is focused on health and safety strategic role in the built environment, with the aim of identifying the directors duties of care and outlines implications of non-compliance with current health and safety legislation.

This course will summarise how to promote positive health and safety culture within the organisation. Group exercises throughout the course will allow learners to discuss their thoughts about health and safety responsibilities and outline the requirements of the HSE guidance HSG65 - Managing for Health and Safety (Plan, Do, Check, Act).
Course Content
This course is endorsed by Build UK and upon completion of the course candidates will be able to: 
Recognise the moral, economic and legal costs/implications of decisions made in the boardroom that make their business liable
Understand the importance of strategic management of risks
Appreciate the consequences of failing to manage health and safety effectively
Understand the importance of competent duty holders cooperating, communicating and coordinating health and safety throughout the whole project
Recognise the need to appoint competent health and safety assistance and the limitations of such an appointment
Identify the basic tools for introducing a proactive health and safety culture into their organisation

Who Should Attend?
This course is designed for directors and senior management who are actively involved with strategic management in their organisations within the built environment of any size in construction, civil engineering or allied trades, and therefore should be considered before enrolling. Examples of relevant roles (not exhaustive) are:
Financial/operations directors
Senior quantity surveyors (QS)
Principal designers
Senior/principal engineer
Company Secretary
Contracts Manager
Senior project manager
Non-executive director
Pre-requisite course entry requirements
To attend this course delegates must demonstrate the following:

Either previously completed a CITB Directors Role for Health and Safety Course, OR working knowledge of the following health and safety legislation with the requirements that the course content and end of course assessment will require learners to understand this legislation in context with the directors role and responsibility:
Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974
Employers Liability (compulsory Insurance) Act 1969
Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM) 2015
Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
CITB recommend participating in the interactive course prior to your DRHS course, it takes approximately 1.5 hours to complete, but you don’t have to do it all at once. You can close the eLearning at any time and, on your return, pick up where you left off. Your progress will be saved automatically. We recommend that you sit the course in 30-minute chunks.

Grant Claims
The Health and Safety for Construction Directors course is eligible for a Tier 1 Grant claim, this grant can only be claimed once per candidate, per lifetime and the grant does not renew.

How long is the certification valid for?
The certification from this course is valid for 5 years, to remain certified candidates will need to retake the course before the expiry date.
