Temporary Works Coordinator - TWC

Course Information

Those responsible for managing all forms of temporary works require the knowledge to be able to develop their skills and knowledge in risk management procedures.

This training course is to give confidence to those responsible for monitoring and managing temporary works to ensure management systems are suitable and sufficient when undertaking temporary works on a project. It identifies and covers the risk and safety management processes outlined in the temporary works code of practice (BS 5975).

The two-day Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) training course is designed to assist those on site who have responsibility for managing all forms of temporary works and will provide you with up-to-date training on the procedures to be followed to mitigate risk during the planning, installation, maintenance, use, and dismantling of temporary works in construction.

Please note: This course alone does not prove competency as a Temporary Works Coordinator. This comes from a mixture of skills, knowledge, training, and experience and should be judged by an appropriate individual.

As a training provider, it is our responsibility to determine whether a learner is appropriate to attend the course. Learners will need to complete an Accreditation of prior experiential learning form (APEL) before attending the course.

What are the requirements?

CITB Courses can now be taken remotely allowing for candidates to undertake training online by working with their tutor in an online meeting in the same way they would in a classroom setting. CITB has also introduced remote courses where candidates can take training courses on their own using online resources.

  • Laptop or Computer – With camera function as you must be clearly visible to the tutor throughout the course

  • Your device requires a microphone and speakers to enable interaction between you, the tutor and other delegates

  • Access to reliable internet is an essential requirement and is the responsibility of each attendee

  • Email address and access to receive course materials and exam

  • Photographic ID – Drivers license/Passport etc.

  • Be able to access “Zoom Cloud Meetings” or "Microsoft Teams" (link to the meeting will be provided by the centre)

  • You must complete and return the delegate information form prior to course attendance

  • Electronic CITB mandatory publications will be emailed prior to the course. Hardcopies maybe available upon request (please enquire at the booking stage)

Temporary Works Coordinator - TWC Course Aims

The course will cover 5 modules of temporary works risk management to assist you through the planning, design, and implementation stages. This will include identifying temporary works, preparing design briefs, establishing design check categories, risk classification, permits, temporary works registers, design check certification, and experience checks. All this encompasses the role of Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC).

APEL Form

Learners should also have a working knowledge of current health and safety legislation. Those who have attended and passed a Site Managers Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course will have gained the knowledge to meet the expectations of the course, but it’s not a mandatory requirement to have achieved the SMSTS to be able to attend this course.

Yes, there is a one-day refresher course accredited through CITB. To be able to attend a refresher course, you must have completed a two-day temporary works coordinator training course (TWC) or temporary works coordinator refresher (TWC-R) within the last 5 years and hold a valid certificate.

Yes, there is a mandatory end-of-course exam, plus you will be required to complete the mandatory exercises and learner personal review. The tutor will also have to review your involvement during the course to ensure a full understanding of the temporary works management procedures.

Yes, you will receive a course workbook, which will provide you with all the details of temporary works management, including example templates of control documentation used in the management of temporary works. This is sent with your course registration information once you register for the course.

This training does not guarantee competence; we will provide you with the knowledge to be able to manage temporary works, but competence relies on skills, knowledge, and experience. Experience is gained over time in the position of coordinator; you should be supervised by an experienced person while undertaking these duties until relevant industry experience is achieved.

Yes, the course will cover the requirements from the perspective of the principal contractor (PC) or subcontractor.

This course can be done online from the comfort of any location, but it does rely on a reliable Wi-Fi connection. It is also recommended that the course be accessed remotely using a laptop and not a tablet or phone.

This course can also be taken in a classroom. Workforce Skills Support can also offer dedicated courses to customers at their own business premises or location of choice (nationwide).

Both types of course delivery will be presented by one of our highly qualified health and safety tutors, who will provide full support throughout the course.

5 years, to keep your certification valid, you will have to attend a 1-day refresher course before your current certificate expires. If your certificate has expired, you will be required to attend the full 2-day temporary works coordinator training course again.

Yes, CITB offers a free online training course, which is the Temporary Works General Awareness Training Course (TWGATC). This is a free-of-charge e-course that will be live on February 20, 2023, and can be accessed via the link below:

Our tutors must meet the CITB requirements and be registered with CITB to be able to deliver this course and the tutor must hold the following accreditations:

  • Be a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE/FICE)

or

  • Be a member of the Institution of Structural Engineers (MIStructE/FIStructE)

or

  • Be a member of the Institution of Royal Engineers (InstRE)
  • Be registered with the Engineering Council

The Temporary Works Coordinator course is eligible for a Tier 2 Grant claim, this grant can only be claimed once per candidate per lifetime and the grant does not renew.
