Explain the hazards, risks, causes and consequences of failure in temporary works.
The avoidance of failure
Describe the techniques used to avoid failure, focusing on the 4Cs.
Stakeholders’ and duty holders’ responsibilities and accountabilities
Identify the key roles and responsibilities of the primary stakeholders responsible for managing the safe implementation, management and dismantling of temporary works, including the appointment of key roles.
Management and control of design
Explain how the TWS supports the TWC in the management and control of the design, materials, components and key solutions.
Key processes
State the key processes that form a safe system of work.
Implementation risk classification
State the importance of implementation risk classification and its impact on design and risk management.
Key activities required during the active life of the temporary works
Describe the key considerations which will help a TWS support the TWC in the co-ordination, supervision and checking of work on site during the construction, erection and dismantling of temporary works.

Learners should also have a working knowledge of current health and safety legislation. Those who have attended and passed a Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) or Site Managers Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course or relevant refresher will have gained the knowledge to meet the expectations of the course, but it’s not a mandatory requirement to have achieved the SMSTS or SSSTS to be able to attend this course.
No, if you currently hold a CITB temporary works supervisor qualification, to retain this, you will have to attend a one-day CITB temporary works supervisor training course again before the expiration of your current certificate, which lasts 5 years.
Yes, there is a mandatory end-of-course exam, plus you will be required to complete the mandatory exercises given to you by your tutor during the course. The tutor will also have to review your involvement during the course to ensure a full understanding of the temporary works management procedures.
Yes, you will receive a course workbook, which will provide you with all the details of temporary works management, including example templates of control documentation used in the management of temporary works. This is sent with your course registration information once you register for the course.
This training does not guarantee competence; we will provide you with the knowledge to be able to manage temporary works, but competence relies on skills, knowledge, and experience. Experience is gained over time in the position of supervisor. You should be supervised by an experienced person while undertaking these duties until relevant industry experience is achieved.
Yes, the course will cover the requirements from the perspective of the principal contractor (PC) or subcontractor.
This course can be done online from the comfort of any location, but it does rely on a reliable Wi-Fi connection. It is also recommended that the course be accessed remotely using a laptop and not a tablet or phone.
This course can also be taken in a classroom. Workforce Skills Support can also offer dedicated courses to customers at their own business premises or location of choice (nationwide).
Both styles of course delivery will be presented by one of our highly qualified health and safety tutors, who will provide full support throughout the course.

The Temporary Works Supervisor course is eligible for a Tier 1 Grant claim, this grant can only be claimed once per candidate per lifetime and the grant does not renew.
