An insight into the SMSTS-R Course

Who is the SMSTS-R course for?

The SMSTS-R course was designed to assist those who have previously completed a Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS). Candidates can also undertake this course after a previous refresher course and wish to retain this qualification and maintain professional standards within the construction sector.

Why do I need this?

Build UK endorses the SMSTS Refresher course as the standard training for all construction managers. The course aims to bring the health and safety knowledge of candidates up to date and give a thorough overview of the legislative changes and their impact on the workplace. The course provides an opportunity to revisit the wide range of topics from the previous five-day course.

The course aims:

Improve awareness of recent developments in construction, legislation and health, safety, welfare and environmental issues

  • Identify measures that will assist the practical implementation of responsibilities established by new legislation and working practices.
  • Implement new guidance and industry best practice.
  • Consolidate their understanding of responsibility and accountability for site health, safety, welfare and the environment.

The course consists of 4 modules, which include:

  • Module 1 – Legal and Management: this module covers Health and Safety Law, CDM, Safe Systems of Work, Inspection procedures, communication and leadership/worker engagement.
  • Module 2 – Health and Welfare: this module covers legislative requirements for the management of health, welfare facilities, COSHH, drugs and alcohol, mental health, asbestos, noise, dust, and manual handling.
  • Module 3 – General Safety: this module covers site organisation, fire prevention and control, electrical safety, temporary works, plant operations and equipment management.
  • Module 4 – High-Risk Activities: This module covers the higher-risk activities faced within the construction industry, such as working at heights and the equipment associated with this type of work, excavations, confined space work, and underground & overhead services.

How long does the SMSTS Refresher take to complete?

The course is held over 2 days (A total of 15 hours)

Yes. On successful completion, the learner will receive an accredited digital CITB certificate. A proof of pass letter can be immediately provided if required upon receipt of the course results from the trainer.

How long is the SMSTS Refresher certificate valid?

The certificate is valid for 5 years.

Are there any entry requirements for SMSTS?

The refresher course is only for delegates who have passed the five-day SMSTS or subsequent refresher course and hold a valid SMSTS certificate. Candidates must provide evidence to the training provider of their eligibility.

Suppose a delegate cannot provide a copy of their certificate. In that case, the online card checker can be used to establish if a delegate currently holds a valid SMSTS certificate.

Suppose an individual cannot be located on the system and no evidence of their certificate can be found. In that case, they will have to attend the full 5-day SMSTS course.

Failure to attend the refresher course prior to the expiry of an existing certificate will require delegates to re-enter the scheme by completing the full 5-day SMSTS course if they wish to remain in the scheme.
