The CPCS A50 Lorry Loader/Securer STGO course aims to provide thorough practical and theoretical training in carrying out Lorry Loader/Securer with various items of plant machinery under STGO legislation (Special Types General Order 2003) and to enable the candidate to competently and safely fulfil the role and pass the relevant CPCS Theory and Practical Tests.

Learning Outcomes

Here is a brief overview of the content of training.
  • Describe the nature of the sector of industry and their role and responsibilities as a loader/securer
  • Name and explain types of transporter, purpose, principal components, the basic construction, controls and terminology
  • Conform with manufacturer’s requirements as per the operator’s handbook, other types of information source and relevant regulations and legislation
  • Undertake all pre-use checks on the transporter and prime mover
  • Configure and set for site and public highway travel, loaded and unloaded
  • Prepare the area for loading and unloading duties
  • Explain actions required for hazards, underground and overhead services
  • Arrange, use and comply with communication procedures
  • Load or direct and position different items of plant on and off a trailer
  • Arrange, secure and ready items of plant on the trailer in preparation for travel on the public highway
  • Explain STGO legislative requirements for transporting loads on the highway
  • Explain considerations when planning a route on the public highway
  • State requirements to be undertaken when loading and unloading on the public highway
  • Carry out shut down and securing procedures
  • Explain the Road Traffic Act requirements

If a candidate has been granted a grant for a particular course in their lifetime, they will not be eligible for grant again for the same course unless it has specific refresher standards published on the short-duration course register.

If refresher course standards do exist for a particular course, then only one refresher course is eligible in a lifetime for each candidate.

CPCS A50 Lorry Loader theoretical and practical tests are a way to prove competence onsite and provide evidence of a candidate's knowledge, experience, and practical skills. These tests can be taken by an experienced individual on the Lorry Loader or by someone who is new to the plant all together following training on the Lorry Loader.
No, unfortunately, you can't renew your CPCS A50 Lorry Loader red card. Holders of the red card are required to complete the relevant NVQ within 2 years of achieving it. If the NVQ is not achieved within the required time frame, you can extend the card with proof of registration on the NVQ. 

If your CPCS A50 Lorry Loader red card expired more than 2 years ago, you still need to complete the relevant NVQ, but additional CPCS theory and practical tests will be required to upgrade the card.

To upgrade the Red CPCS A50 Lorry Loader Trained Operator Card, you will have to achieve, within 2 years, the relevant NVQ.

The correct NVQ is L2 certificate in Plant Operations, Pathway 1- Cranes and Specialist Lifting. You can complete this NVQ through us. We can advise on how to book this course; please call the office on 01623 287830.

If your card expired more than 2 years ago, please contact us for advice, and we can advise on how you can re-enter the CPCS card scheme once the NVQ is achieved.
