Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have questions about this NVQ? Here is a compilation of our most frequently asked questions.

Land drilling involves preparing and using drilling equipment and powered rigs to drill and complete holes in the ground according to specified drilling programmes, often for ground investigation, utilities, geotechnical purposes, or construction preparation. This NVQ confirms you can carry out drilling tasks to the required standard in a workplace environment.

The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Land Drilling Operations assesses your competence in workplace drilling activities. It offers two main pathways:

  • Land Driller — focuses on drilling holes to specification and managing key drilling tasks
  • Land Driller Support Operative — focuses on supporting drilling operations and related duties

The qualification includes mandatory units on safety, productive working practices, and selected drilling or support tasks.

Typical skills assessed include:

  • Contributing to the specified drilling programme in your workplace
  • Establishing work area protection and safety
  • Conforming to general health, safety, and welfare standards
  • Working productively and effectively
  • Drilling and completing holes to specification (Driller pathway)
  • Reinstating ground condition and equipment maintenance (Support Operative pathway)
  • Operating tools, setting out work control, signalling, and handling materials (optional units)

Evidence for these skills is gathered from your actual job duties and assessed by an NVQ assessor.

The NVQ cost can vary. Please see our payment options

There are no formal academic entry requirements. You must already be working in a land drilling role (as a driller or support operative) so you can gather workplace evidence of your competence for assessment.

  • Professional discussions about how you perform tasks
  • Review of workplace evidence (photos, job sheets, risk assessments, etc.)

There are no written exams — you demonstrate competence through your everyday work activities.

Examples of suitable evidence include:

  • Photographs or videos of drilling tasks completed
  • Job records and project documentation
  • Method statements or risk assessments you’ve used
  • Witness testimonies from supervisors or colleagues
  • Records of tools, machines, and materials you’ve used
