IATP, or Independent Asbestos Training Providers, is a collection of asbestos training providers who have been audited to ensure that they are competent and compliant with asbestos legislation.
Yes – IATP (Independent Asbestos Training Providers) Asbestos Awareness and UKATA (UK Asbestos Training Association) Asbestos Awareness courses both meet the HSE’s legal requirements under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. The difference is not in the training quality itself, but in how widely each is recognised by contractors.
Some companies or main contractors insist on “UKATA only” because it is a well-known brand in the construction industry and may be written into their site induction or pre-qualification requirements. This does not mean IATP training is lower quality – it simply means that UKATA is the preferred or specified provider for certain contracts.

There is no legal requirement to repeat an entire formal awareness refresher training course every 12 months. However, some form of refresher should be given, as necessary, to help ensure knowledge of asbestos awareness is maintained.
