Asbestos Awareness UKATA Accredited

Course Information

This UKATA Asbestos Awareness course is for general builders, plumbers, carpenters, electricians, scaffolders, and other trades involved in construction and maintenance activities, and is suitable for those carrying out operative, supervisor, management and leadership roles. It aims to educate them on the types and locations of asbestos as well as the dangers that come with asbestos in the workplace. You will gain a UKATA Accredited Certification upon completion.

This UKATA Accredited Asbestos Awareness course covers the dangers of asbestos and where the Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM) can be found, in line with regulatory requirements laid out in Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

Workforce Skills Support is an approved UKATA asbestos training provider.

UKATA Asbestos AwarenessCourse Aims

The purpose of training delivered against this standard is to provide candidates with an understanding of potential locations and types of asbestos products, the risks and ill health effects of exposure to asbestos containing materials (ACMs), actions to take to avoid work which may disturb asbestos-containing materials and emergency procedures through accidental disturbance.

  • Analyse the health risks associated with asbestos exposure, including the impact of smoking.
  • Review general epidemiology and statistics related to asbestos.
  • Recognise various types of asbestos and their common uses.
  • Identify where asbestos and asbestos containing materials (ACMs) can be typically found within
    buildings
  • Understand the primary purposes behind the use of asbestos in coatings, insulation, asbestos insulating board, asbestos cement, and other asbestos containing materials.
  • Describe the risks of fibre release from various asbestos containing materials.
  • Demonstrate how to find information about asbestos presence prior to starting work.
  • Explain the emergency procedures for situations where asbestos or ACMs are unexpectedly disturbed
    or discovered during work.
  • Comprehend the role of asbestos legislation within the broader context of health and safety laws.
  • Summarise key asbestos legislation, focusing on Regulations 5 and 6 of the Control of Asbestos
    Regulations (CAR

The short answer is no. This course aims to provide basic knowledge and reduce the risk of any incidents.

Further competence and availability are learned over time and and accessed via instructions and assessments. It will, through question and answer and a timed, invigilated, closed-book written examination, ensure that a learner has reached the necessary level of understanding.

There is no legal requirement to repeat an entire formal awareness refresher training course every 12 months. However, some form of refresher should be given, as necessary, to help ensure knowledge of asbestos awareness is maintained.

The content of this course is designed to provide anyone whose work could foreseeably expose them to asbestos with sufficient knowledge to avoid putting themselves or others at risk, in line with regulatory requirements laid out in Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

On successful completion of a multiple-choice and written-question exam paper, candidates receive a UKATA accredited certificate recognised under:

Certificate of Competence of Demolition Operatives (CCDO) Card Scheme.
