The NPORS N223 Scraper course aims to provide thorough practical and theory-based plant training in operating a skid steer loader to enable the candidate to competently and safely carry out the role and pass the NPORS Theory and Practical Tests.

Describe the nature of the sector of industry and their role and responsibilities as a plant operator
Name and explain the purpose of principal components, the basic construction, controls and terminology
Conform with manufacturer’s requirements as per the operator’s handbook, other types of information source and relevant regulations and legislation
Undertake all pre-use checks
Configure and set for travel
Travel over rough, undulating ground, substantial inclines and level surfaces – loaded and unloaded
Manoeuvre in confined spaces whilst carrying loads
Ensure the suitability of the loading and depositing area

Explain actions required for hazards, underground and overhead services
Position and set to load and deposit materials / ground
Excavate various types of ground
Transfer and deposit loads to different locations
Form stockpiles of material
Grade, spread and level ground and materials
Explain push-loading techniques
Carry out shut down and securing procedures

There are no formal prerequisites, but it is recommended that participants have some experience in operating construction machinery and a basic understanding of health and safety regulations on construction sites.

The course includes both theoretical and practical assessments. Participants must pass a written test covering health and safety, machine knowledge, and operational techniques, as well as a practical test demonstrating their ability to safely operate a motorised scraper.

Preparation can include studying the course materials, reviewing the NPORS test specifications, and gaining practical experience with motorised scrapers.

Participants should bring appropriate clothing and footwear for practical training, as well as personal protective equipment (PPE).

To achieve the NPORS Red Trained Operator Card, candidates must pass both the CSCS touch screen H+S test (within the last 2 years) and the CPCS Theory Test and the Practical Test.
