Learning Outcomes

Here is a brief overview of the content of training.
  • Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as a plant operator
  • Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used, and be familiar with other types of information sources and relevant legislation
  • Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
  • Be able to locate and identify steering, driving and breaking controls and explain their functions
  • Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements
  • Check all emergency lowering functions
  • Safely mount and dismount the machine
  • Configure the machine for travel
  • Configure the machine for travel and manoeuvre it safely on level / rough ground and inclines in open and confined areas
  • Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area, including overhead and underground hazards
  • Manoeuvre the machine to the work area and correctly configure in readiness to carry out accessing tasks
  • Carry out accessing tasks, at various points up to full operating height
  • Travel with platform raised (where applicable)
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation
  • Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures

If a candidate has been granted a grant for a particular course in their lifetime, they will not be eligible for grant again for the same course unless it has specific refresher standards published on the short-duration course register.

If refresher course standards do exist for a particular course, then only one refresher course is eligible in a lifetime for each candidate.

Yes, the course is open to both novice and experienced operators. Novice operators will receive more in-depth training to cover all aspects of MEWP operation, while experienced operators may only need refresher or assessment training.

Yes, if you have the NPORS/CSCS dual-branded card, you can use it on construction sites that require a valid CSCS card. The traditional NPORS card is recognised in many industries but may not be sufficient for some construction sites without the CSCS endorsement.

Yes, if you are applying for the NPORS card with the CSCS logo, you will need to pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) test within the last two years to meet the construction site requirements.

NPORS offers different card types depending on the needs of the employer and operator:

  • Traditional NPORS Card: This card is often used on non-construction sites.
  • NPORS with CSCS Logo: This version includes the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) logo, which is required on most UK construction sites.

For entrants that wish to apply for the NPORS Traditional Card, there is no requirement to have an NVQ qualification. If the ‘HS&E TESTED Logo’ is required on the card, entrants must ensure they have attended and passed the CITB Operatives Health, Safety, and Environment Test within the two years prior to application for the card and will have to achieve, within 2 years, the relevant NVQ.
