Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have questions about this NVQ? Here is a compilation of our most frequently asked questions.

Dry lining is the installation of internal wall and ceiling systems using plasterboard, metal or timber framing, and associated components. Interior systems include a range of non-structural finishes such as suspended ceilings, plasterboard linings, cavity barrier installation, and other interior fit-out work. This NVQ recognises competence across these systems in real workplace roles.

The Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Interior Systems includes multiple pathways so candidates can be assessed in the work they actually do. Pathways include:

  • Ceiling fixing (suspended ceiling systems)
  • Dry lining finishing
  • Dry lining boarding (plasterboard linings)
  • Cavity barrier installation

Each pathway has specific units related to those systems, all assessed in the workplace.

Interior systems and dry lining work are essential in modern construction for:

  • Creating internal walls, partitions and ceilings
  • Providing fire protection and compartmentation
  • Enhancing acoustic performance
  • Preparing surfaces for decoration and finishing
  • Concealing services within walls and ceilings

These systems contribute to the final functionality, safety, and quality of internal spaces.

Typical skills assessed include:

  • Complying with health, safety, and welfare standards on site
  • Working productively and effectively in a construction environment
  • Moving, handling, and storing materials and resources
  • Installing suspended ceilings, plasterboard linings, or finishing dry lining work depending on pathway
  • Demonstrating competence in real workplace tasks under observation

The focus is on competence in your actual job role, not classroom instruction.

The NVQ cost can vary. Please see our payment options

There are no formal academic requirements. However, candidates must already be working in an appropriate interior systems or dry lining role so they can generate evidence of competence through normal workplace activities.

Assessment is workplace-based and focuses on practical performance. It includes:

  • Observation of your work by a qualified assessor
  • Professional discussions
  • Evidence of completed installations or projects
  • Knowledge-based questions (written or verbal)

Examples of acceptable evidence include:

  • Photographs or videos of work completed on site
  • Job records, method statements, risk assessments
  • Witness testimonies from supervisors or colleagues
  • Professional discussions with your assessor
  • Workplace documents showing your contribution to interior systems tasks

Evidence must be naturally occurring from your job role.
