The EUSR - Utility Excavations Category 1. Locate Utility Services (HSG47) face-to-face course is for anyone who is involved in groundworks, excavations, highways maintenance, plant operators, utility operatives, supervisors and managers who will need to detect the presence of underground services.

This course is a EUSR-accredited course and as an accredited training and assessment provider through the Energy & Utility Skills approved programme you will receive a EUSR registration and card valid for 3-years.

This is a classroom-based presentation with practical application on the safe use of the CAT (Cable Avoidance Tool) and Genny (Signal Generator) in compliance with HSG47 - Avoiding danger from underground services, The course can also encompass the use of flexible trace wire and sonde for locating underground pipes such as surface and foul drainage.

Learners attending the course are requested to bring a hi-vis vest or jacket or full site PPE if the training will take place on a construction site.

This course can be adapted to suit the client’s requirements; training can be delivered on site using the client’s training room or at a convenient, suitable location utilising the specific equipment.

Equipment Requirements
We the training provider is able to provide radiodetection gCAT 4+ & Genny 4 equipment.

Utility Excavations Category - Locate Utility Services (HSG47) (CAT and Genny)Course Aims

The aim of this course is to provide an overview of the radiodetection ‘CAT’ (Cable Avoidance Tool) and Genny (Signal Generator) to meet the HSG47 health and safety guidelines for avoiding danger from underground services. Each candidate will be instructed on the correct location techniques, methods of detection, safe systems of work, utility plans and limitations of equipment.

Assessment criteria

  • Interpret plans/maps in accordance with job instruction
  • Identify plan references and symbols
  • Explain potential safety considerations and control measures when carrying out a risk assessment
  • Carry out a site-specific risk assessment and establish a safe working zone

Assessment criteria

  • Identify the features of a typical Safe System of Work
  • Check appropriate PPE is free from damage, fit for purpose and available to use
  • State potential contingencies and personal actions if unforseen events or emergencies occur
  • Explain the roles and responsibilities of individuals involved in the work site operation
  • Identify appropriate resources and equipment required to carry out location and marking work safely
  • Check that a safe working zone exists and is appropriately protected with barriers and signs
  • State the action to take if equipment is found to be defective or damaged
  • Complete a visual assessment of the location equipment and explain how you record and defective finding
  • State the potential consequences of damaged or faulty equipment is used
  • Demonstrate all the pre-use checks on the location equipment to be used, in accordance with the specific manufacturer's instructions

  • Check that all necessary preparatory work has been completed correctly, prior to work commencing
  • Explain how different modes operate and their limitations
  • Demonstrate how to use the location equipment to detect and locate underground services
  • Explain the limitations and challenges posed by specific types of underground services
  • Outline the advantages and disadvantages of using Ground Penetrating Radar as an additional piece of location equipment
  • Explain the importance of marking up signals detected and the variety of marking materials that can be used
  • Identify any control measures needed to mitigate risks associated with location activities
  • Demonstrate how both Parallel Sweeps and Radial Sweeps can be beneficial

Assessment criteria

  • Select appropriate mode required for initial sweep of the designated excavation area to locate a potential power cable shown on the site plan
  • Carry out sufficient locating and sweeping of the area to confirm underground services located
  • Interpret correctly results shown by the location equipment
  • Demonstrate the use of all available modes to locate another type of buried service shown on the plan
  • Demonstrate the use of appropriate marking methods and materials to indicate the location of different services
  • Record and report any unexpected findings, both prior to work starting and throughout the location activity

Candidates whose first language is not English are welcome to attend. However, all courses are conducted, assessed/marked and certificated using the English language.

To successfully complete the course, candidates must have a sufficient level of English to:

  • Understand the course they are registered for
  • Recognise the purpose of undertaking it
