The CPCS Crawler Side Boom (A35) course aims to provide thorough practical and theoretical training in operating a crawler, tractor, or side boom and to enable the candidate to competently and safely carry out the role and pass the CPCS Theory and Practical Tests.

  • Describe the nature of the sector of industry and their role and responsibilities as a plant operator
  • Name and explain the purpose of principal components, the basic construction, controls and terminology
  • Conform with manufacturer’s requirements as per the operator’s handbook, other types of information source and relevant regulations and legislation
  • Travel over rough, undulating ground, substantial inclines and level surfaces
  • Manoeuvre the plant equipment in confined spaces
  • Configure and set for site travel & lifting duties
  • Explain rigging and de-rigging procedures
  • Explain actions required for hazards, underground and overhead services
  • Programme / set-up Rated Capacity Indicators for lifting duties
  • Lift various loads using full radius capabilities
  • Accurately place loads
  • Minimise the swinging of loads
  • Move loads through machine travel
  • Comply with signals and instructions
  • Prepare the side-boom in preparation of movement post-lifting duties

If refresher course standards do exist for a particular course, then only one refresher course is eligible in a lifetime for each candidate.

The duration of the course varies but typically lasts between 3 and 5 days, depending on the training provider and the experience level of the participants.
The course includes both theoretical classroom-based learning and practical hands-on training. Participants will engage in practical exercises to demonstrate their competency in operating the crawler side boom safely and effectively.
Participants should bring personal protective equipment (PPE), such as a hard hat, safety boots, and high-visibility clothing. It is also recommended to bring a notebook and pen for taking notes during the theoretical sessions.

To achieve the Red CPCS Trained Operator Card, candidates must pass both the CSCS touch screen H+S test (within the last 2 years) and the CPCS Theory Test and the Practical Test.
