If a candidate has been granted a grant for a particular course in their lifetime, they will not be eligible for grant again for the same course unless it has specific refresher standards published on the short-duration course register.

If refresher course standards do exist for a particular course, then only one refresher course is eligible in a lifetime for each candidate.

The A58 course covers essential skills and knowledge, including:

With the CPCS A58 certification, you can work in roles such as:

To achieve the Red CPCS Trained Operator Card, candidates must pass both the CSCS touch screen H+S test (within the last 2 years) and the CPCS Theory Test and the Practical Test.

To upgrade the Red CPCS Trained Operator Card, you will have to achieve, within 2 years, the relevant NVQ.

Upon successfully passing both the theory and practical assessments, you will receive a CPCS Red Trained Operator Card, which is valid for 2 years. This card certifies that you are competent to operate a 360-degree excavator below 10 tonnes.

After receiving your CPCS Red Card, you can:

  • Operate a 360-degree excavator below 10 tonnes on UK construction sites.
  • Work towards completing the CPCS Competence Card (Blue Card), which requires an NVQ Level 2 in Plant Operations.
  • The CPCS Red Card is a temporary card for operators who have passed their technical test and need to gain further on-site experience.
  • The CPCS Blue Card is awarded after completing an NVQ Level 2 in Plant Operations, demonstrating full competence. It is valid for 5 years and can be renewed by taking a refresher test.

No, the CPCS Red Card cannot be renewed. You must progress to the CPCS Blue Card by completing an NVQ Level 2 within the 2-year validity of the Red Card.

The CPCS Red Trained Operator Card is valid for 2 years. Following this period, operators must get the CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card by completing an NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) and proving continued competency.
