Course Information

The CPCS A24 Motorised Scraper Course is designed to provide operators with the knowledge and skills required to safely and effectively operate a motorised scraper, as well as prepare them for the CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) A24 technical test.

The course is intended for individuals who are either new to operating motorised scrapers or those who have experience but want to gain formal qualifications and improve their skills.

The CPCS A24 Motorised Scraper course aims to provide thorough practical and theory-based plant training in operating a skid steer loader to enable the candidate to competently and safely carry out the role and pass the CPCS Theory and Practical Tests.

Learning Outcomes

Here is a brief overview of the content of training.
  • Describe the nature of the sector of industry and their role and responsibilities as a plant operator
  • Name and explain the purpose of principal components, the basic construction, controls and terminology
  • Conform with manufacturer’s requirements as per the operator’s handbook, other types of information source and relevant regulations and legislation
  • Undertake all pre-use checks
  • Configure and set for travel
  • Travel over rough, undulating ground, substantial inclines and level surfaces – loaded and unloaded
  • Manoeuvre in confined spaces whilst carrying loads
  • Ensure the suitability of the loading and depositing area
  • Explain actions required for hazards, underground and overhead services
  • Position and set to load and deposit materials / ground
  • Excavate various types of ground
  • Transfer and deposit loads to different locations
  • Form stockpiles of material
  • Grade, spread and level ground and materials
  • Explain push-loading techniques
  • Carry out shut down and securing procedures
  • Explain the loading and unloading procedures for machine transporting

If a candidate has been granted a grant for a particular course in their lifetime, they will not be eligible for grant again for the same course unless it has specific refresher standards published on the short-duration course register.

If refresher course standards do exist for a particular course, then only one refresher course is eligible in a lifetime for each candidate.

There are no formal prerequisites, but it is recommended that participants have some experience in operating construction machinery and a basic understanding of health and safety regulations on construction sites.
The course includes both theoretical and practical assessments. Participants must pass a written test covering health and safety, machine knowledge, and operational techniques, as well as a practical test demonstrating their ability to safely operate a motorised scraper.
Preparation can include studying the course materials, reviewing the CPCS test specifications, and gaining practical experience with motorised scrapers.
Participants should bring appropriate clothing and footwear for practical training, as well as personal protective equipment (PPE).

To achieve the Red CPCS Trained Operator Card, candidates must pass both the CSCS touch screen H+S test (within the last 2 years) and the CPCS Theory Test and the Practical Test.
