The CPCS A26 MEWP Boom training course aims to provide thorough practical and theory-based plant training in operating a MEWPS-Boom to enable the candidate to competently and safely carry out the role and pass the CPCS Theory and Practical Tests.

Learning Outcomes

Here is a brief overview of the content of training.
  • Name and explain the purpose of principal components, the basic construction, controls and terminology
  • Conform with manufacturer’s requirements as per the operator’s handbook, other types of information source and relevant regulations and legislation
  • Undertake all pre-use checks
  • Check emergency lowering functions
  • Configure and set plant equipment for site travel
  • Travel over level surfaces (all types) and uneven terrain (self propelled)
  • Explain travel procedures and precautions on inclines
  • Manoeuvre in confined spaces
  • Configure and set plant for accessing duties
  • Position the platform to access a work position
  • Explain actions required for hazards, underground and overhead services
  • Access working points up to full operating height and reach
  • Travel with a raised platform (relevant endorsement)
  • Carry out shutdown and securing procedures

Please note: There is a cap on how many times an employer can claim a short-duration course achievement grant. Check the CITB website for information on the number of claims allowed based on your last levy return.

If a candidate has been granted a grant for a particular course in their lifetime, they will not be eligible for grant again for the same course unless it has specific refresher standards published on the short-duration course register.

If refresher course standards do exist for a particular course, then only one refresher course is eligible in a lifetime for each candidate.

Generally, candidates must have a good understanding of spoken and written English, as well as the health and safety aspects relevant to MEWPs. Specific prerequisites may vary by training provider, so it’s advisable to check with them.
The assessment for the CPCS A26 course includes a practical test where candidates must demonstrate their ability to operate the MEWP safely and efficiently. There may also be a written test to assess theoretical knowledge.

To achieve the Red CPCS Trained Operator Card, candidates must pass both the CSCS touch screen H+S test (within the last 2 years) and the CPCS Theory Test and the Practical Test.

To upgrade the Red CPCS Trained Operator Card, you will have to achieve, within 2 years, the relevant NVQ. For more information on the required NVQ, please contact us at 01623 287830.
