First Aid at Work (FAW) – HSE-Compliant Workplace First Aid

Course Information

This course is designed for individuals aged 16 or older who work in medium- to high-risk workplace environments (for example construction sites, warehouses or large offices) and who need full first-aid training to comply with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) First Aid Regulations.

It is also suitable for those responsible for first aid provision in their workplace, whether they are new to the role or need to refresh their skills.

First Aid at Work (FAW) – HSE-Compliant Workplace First AidCourse Aims

The aim of this course is to equip participants with the knowledge, skills and confidence to act as a first aider in the workplace. Specifically, to:
  • Understand relevant health & safety regulations and your workplace’s first-aid arrangements.
  • Recognise and respond to a wide range of medical emergencies and injuries in adults.
  • Provide safe and appropriate first aid (including CPR, choking, bleeding, shock, seizures).
  • Use automated external defibrillators (AEDs) where appropriate (theory-based).
  • Manage an incident from scene assessment through to handing over to emergency services.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course delegates will have gained knowledge and skills in:
  • Explain the role and responsibilities of a workplace first aider and summarise the relevant HSE regulations.
  • Perform adult CPR, use AED theory, place a casualty in the recovery position, and manage choking.
  • Recognise and respond to fainting, seizures, stroke, chest pain, allergic reactions, asthma and low blood sugar.
  • Provide first aid for minor and major bleeding, burns/scalds, fractures, head/spinal injuries and eye injuries.
  • Manage shock, poisoning, and other emergency situations until professional help arrives.
  • Apply practical first-aid skills in realistic workplace scenarios and reflect on how to improve workplace first-aid provision.

The First Aid at Work course runs over three full working days (approx. 6 hours including breaks per day).

To ensure quality, safety, and effective hands-on learning, the First Aid at Work course allows a maximum of 12 delegates per session.

Yes. The First Aid at Work certificate is valid for three years.

To remain HSE-compliant, first aiders must complete a First Aid at Work requalification course before their current certificate expires.

It is also recommended that delegates attend an annual first aid refresher course to maintain confidence and practical skills.

The First Aid at Work course content includes all key topics required by the HSE, such as:

  • The role and responsibilities of a first aider
  • Scene assessment and casualty communication
  • Adult CPR and recovery position
  • Choking and automated external defibrillator (AED) theory
  • Common workplace medical emergencies (fainting, stroke, seizures, asthma, allergic reactions, chest pain, low blood sugar)
  • Workplace injuries and trauma (bleeding, burns, fractures, head, spinal and eye injuries)
  • Managing shock, poisoning, and other first aid emergencies until professional help arrives

This HSE First Aid at Work course is ideal for:

  • Employees appointed as workplace first aiders
  • Staff working in medium- to high-risk industries such as construction, manufacturing, logistics, and large offices
  • Anyone needing comprehensive first aid training to comply with HSE workplace regulations

Candidates whose first language is not English are welcome to attend. However, all courses are conducted, assessed/marked and certificated in English.

To successfully complete the course, candidates must have a sufficient level of English to:

  • Undertake the course requirements
  • Understand the course they are registered for
  • Recognise the purpose of undertaking it

For candidates whose first language is not English, the use of a bilingual dictionary in book form (not electronic or translator devices) is permitted during assessment.

Yes. CITB-registered employers may be able to claim a CITB funding to help cover the cost of the First Aid at Work training.

Yes – Upon successful completion of the course, delegates will receive an HSE-recognised First Aid at Work certificate confirming their qualification as a competent workplace first aider.

Yes. This First Aid at Work training is fully accredited by CITB ATO WSS Certification and meets the standards of the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981.

It is delivered by an approved first aid training provider following HSE guidelines.

Your First Aid at Work certificate is valid for three years from the date of issue.
To maintain certified status, delegates must complete a First Aid at Work requalification course before expiry.
