The CPCS A21 Wheeled Loading Shovel Training Course is designed to provide training and assessment for individuals who wish to operate a wheeled loading shovel safely and efficiently. The course prepares candidates for the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card.

This course is suitable for both novice operators who have little to no experience operating a wheeled loading shovel and experienced operators who need to refresh their skills and knowledge or obtain their CPCS certification.

The CPCS A21 Wheeled Loading Shovel training course aims to provide thorough practical and theoretical plant training in operating a wheeled loading shovel and to enable the candidate to competently and safely carry out the role and pass the CPCS Theory and Practical Tests.

Learning Outcomes

Here is a brief overview of the content of training.
  • Name and explain the purpose of principal components, the basic construction, controls and terminology
  • Conform with manufacturer’s requirements as per the operator’s handbook, other types of information source and relevant regulations and legislation
  • Undertake all pre-use checks
  • Configure and set for site and highway travel
  • Travel over rough, undulating ground, substantial inclines and level surfaces; laden and unladen
  • Manoeuvre plant in confined spaces
  • Configure and set for extraction and loading duties
  • Explain actions required for hazards, underground and overhead services
  • Extract differing types of materials from stockpiles and other sources
  • Form stockpiles of segregated materials and construct (temporary) ramps
  • Sort and place materials into transporting vehicles and hoppers
  • Spread and level ground and materials
  • Carry out shut down and securing procedures
  • Explain the loading and unloading procedures for machine transporting

Please note: There is a cap on how many times an employer can claim a short-duration course achievement grant. Check the CITB website for information on the number of claims allowed based on your last levy return.

If a candidate has been granted a grant for a particular course in their lifetime, they will not be eligible for grant again for the same course unless it has specific refresher standards published on the short-duration course register.

If refresher course standards do exist for a particular course, then only one refresher course is eligible in a lifetime for each candidate.

Candidates should have a good understanding of spoken and written English.
The course consists of a combination of classroom-based learning and practical, hands-on training. It culminates in a practical test and a theory test to assess the candidate’s competence.
Candidates should bring PPE (personal protective equipment), such as safety boots, hi-visibility clothing, and hard hats.

To achieve the Red CPCS Trained Operator Card, candidates must pass both the CSCS touch screen H+S test (within the last 2 years) and the CPCS Theory Test and the Practical Test.
