The CPCS A04 Tower Crane course is intended to teach learners the information and skills necessary to operate a tower crane safely and efficiently. It discusses both theoretical and practical elements of crane operation.

The course is designed for people who are new to tower crane operations or want to formalise their expertise and obtain CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) certification.

Learning Outcomes

Here is a brief overview of the content of training.
  • Name and explain the purpose of principle components, the basic construction, controls and terminology
  • Conform with manufacturers requirements as per the operators handbook, other types of information source and relevant regulations and legislation
  • Undertake all pre-use checks and place the crane into service
  • Explain procedures that must be taken if assessing the jib for inspection and maintenance purposes
  • Configure the crane for lifting duties
  • Explain the reasons for changing the number of falls of rope
  • Explain actions required for hazards and overhead services
  • Programme/set-up rated capacity indicators and/or other load/distance indicators for lifting duties
  • Lift various loads using the full radius and slewing capabilities of a crane
  • Accurately place loads, Minimise the swinging of loads
  • Move loads through machine travel and comply with signals and instructions
  • Maintain safe working situations
  • Carry out out-of-service and securing procedures

If a candidate has been granted a grant for a particular course in their lifetime, they will not be eligible for grant again for the same course unless it has specific refresher standards published on the short-duration course register.

If refresher course standards do exist for a particular course, then only one refresher course is eligible in a lifetime for each candidate.

To achieve the Red CPCS Trained Operator Card candidates must pass both the CSCS touch screen H+S test (within the last 2 years) and the CPCS Theory Test and the Practical Test.

The CPCS certification is widely recognised in the United Kingdom and a few other countries. However, certification recognition varies internationally, so verify with local regulatory agencies if you plan to work overseas.
Participants should have a basic understanding of how construction sites operate. Previous expertise with cranes or heavy machinery is useful but not required.
Participants must wear proper PPE, such as a hard hat, a high-visibility vest, safety boots, and gloves.
The course normally lasts three to five days, depending on the participant's level of experience.

To upgrade to the CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card, you must first pass the applicable NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) and get on-site experience. The Blue Competent Operator Card is good for 5 years.
