Course Information

The CPCS A17 Telehandler course is a training programme designed to provide operators with the knowledge and skills required to safely and effectively operate a telescopic handler (telehandler). Successful completion leads to the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card.

The CPCS Telehandler (A17) course aims to provide thorough theoretical and practical training in operating a telehandler to enable the candidate to competently and safely operate the machine and pass the CPCS Telescopic Handler training course Theory and Practical Tests.

Learning Outcomes

Here is a brief overview of the content of training.
  • Operating the plant machinery on all normal tasks for which it is designed
  • Deciding whether a particular load is safe to lift
  • Carrying out routine telescopic handler servicing procedures and plant maintenance in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions
  • Conducting minor mechanical adjustments
  • Preparing and driving the machine on public highways, and loading in onto a transporter in accordance with the requirements of the UK Road Traffic Acts
  • Understanding the purpose and capabilities of the machine and any relevant safety precautions necessary for its operation
  • How the handler machine works and the maintenance requirements involved
  • The effect of load, size, weight, gradients and ground conditions upon machine stability
  • Loading, storage and transit of representative materials
  • The basic construction of pallets
  • The permitted loading of scaffolds

If a candidate has been granted a grant for a particular course in their lifetime, they will not be eligible for grant again for the same course unless it has specific refresher standards published on the short-duration course register.

If refresher course standards do exist for a particular course, then only one refresher course is eligible in a lifetime for each candidate.

The course duration varies depending on the experience level of the participants. Typically, it ranges from 3 to 5 days.
To achieve the Red CPCS Trained Operator Card, candidates must pass both the CSCS touch screen H+S test (within the last 2 years) and the CPCS Theory Test and the Practical Test.

Participants should bring appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including a hard hat, safety boots, and high-visibility clothing. Some training centres may provide PPE if you do not have your own.
