The NPORS N010 Telescopic Handler course is a certification programme that provides individuals with the knowledge and practical skills needed to safely operate telescopic handlers (telehandlers) in a construction or industrial setting. NPORS (National Plant Operators Registration Scheme) is a recognised authority in providing operator training and certification for machinery.

There are no formal entry requirements, but learners should:

  • Be at least 16 years old (18 in some workplaces).
  • Have a good understanding of written and spoken English.
  • Be in good health to safely operate heavy machinery.

The course covers both theoretical and practical aspects of operating a telescopic handler, including:

  • Health and safety regulations: Understanding site safety, risk assessments, and safe working practices.
  • Pre-operational checks: Inspection and maintenance of the telescopic handler.
  • Operating the telescopic handler: Practical training in lifting, moving, and placing loads.
  • Load handling: Understanding weight limits, stability, and safe load handling techniques.
  • Operating on different terrain: Safe use on various surfaces, including slopes and uneven ground.
  • End-of-shift checks: Proper shutdown and storage of the machine.

You will be trained to operate telescopic handlers, which are versatile machines used for lifting, moving, and placing materials on construction or industrial sites. These machines are equipped with a telescopic boom that can extend forward and upward.

Yes, if you are applying for the NPORS card with the CSCS logo, you will need to pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) test within the last two years to meet the construction site requirements.

NPORS offers different card types depending on the needs of the employer and operator:

  • Traditional NPORS Card: This card is often used on non-construction sites.
  • NPORS with CSCS Logo: This version includes the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) logo, which is required on most UK construction sites.
  • Nationally recognised certification: NPORS is accepted across a wide range of industries, including construction, agriculture, and warehousing.
  • Enhanced safety knowledge: Operators gain a deeper understanding of safety procedures, reducing the risk of accidents on-site.
  • Increased job opportunities: Many employers require NPORS certification to operate machinery on-site.
  • Compliance with legal requirements: Helps both employers and operators meet the legal requirements for operating heavy machinery.

For entrants that wish to apply for the NPORS Traditional Card, there is no requirement to have an NVQ qualification. If the ‘HS&E TESTED Logo’ is required on the card, entrants must ensure they have attended and passed the CITB Operatives Health, Safety, and Environment Test within the two years prior to application for the card and will have to achieve, within 2 years, the relevant NVQ.

For more information on the required NVQ, please contact us at 01623 287830.
