Learning Outcomes

Here is a brief overview of the content of training.
  • Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as a plant operator
  • Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook and other sources of information, regulations and legislation applicable to the particular machine to be used
  • Be able to locate and identify the major components of the vehicle and loader crane and explain their functions
  • Be able to locate and identify all operating controls and explain their functions
  • Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with the manufacturer’s and legislative requirements
  • Configure the vehicle and loader crane ready for travel
  • Configure the machine for travel and manoeuvre it safely across varying terrain in open and confined areas
  • Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
  • Manoeuvre the machine to the work area and correctly configure in readiness to carry out lifting duties
  • Correctly deploy the stabilisers according to stated manufacturer’s specifications
  • Comply with all requirements for rated capacity indicators or load moment indicators
  • Identify weights and centres of gravity of loads to be used
  • Carry out lifting operations using the full capabilities of the loader crane
  • Position loads accurately at designated locations including onto and from the vehicle
  • Identify, fit and remove various attachments and lifting accessories as appropriate
  • Minimise load swing and ensure load security on the vehicle
  • Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures

Please note: There is a cap on how many times an employer can claim a short-duration course achievement grant. Check the CITB website for information on the number of claims allowed based on your last levy return.

If a candidate has been granted a grant for a particular course in their lifetime, they will not be eligible for grant again for the same course unless it has specific refresher standards published on the short-duration course register.

If refresher course standards do exist for a particular course, then only one refresher course is eligible in a lifetime for each candidate.

Novice Operator: 2 Days, maximum of 3 candidates

Experienced Operator: 1 Day test only, maximum of 4 candidates

Yes, NPORS certification is recognised across the UK and is accepted by many employers in the construction and logistics industries.
There are no formal prerequisites, but candidates should have a basic understanding of health and safety and be physically able to operate a lorry loader.
While a driving licence is not a prerequisite for the course itself, it is generally required for operating a lorry loader on public roads.

For entrants that wish to apply for the NPORS Traditional Card, there is no requirement to have an NVQ qualification. If the ‘HS&E TESTED Logo’ is required on the card, entrants must ensure they have attended and passed the CITB Operatives Health, Safety, and Environment Test within the two years prior to application for the card and will have to achieve, within 2 years, the relevant NVQ.
