First Aid at Work Requalification – HSE Compliant Workplace First Aid

Course Information

This course is designed for individuals who already hold a valid certificate from the 3-day First Aid at Work (FAW) course and wish to renew or update their certification. If your certificate has expired by more than a month, you may need to undertake the full 3-day FAW course instead.

Delegates must be aged 16 or older and have a basic command of English (Level 2 or equivalent) to attend.

First Aid At Work RequalificationCourse Aims

The aim of this first-aid requalification course is to refresh, update and reinforce the knowledge and skills of existing workplace first aiders so they remain confident, compliant and ready to respond. Specifically, to:
  • Reinforce understanding of the role and responsibilities of a workplace first aider under HSE regulations.
  • Update and practise key first-aid interventions including CPR, choking, bleeding, shock and other emergencies.
  • Familiarise delegates with current best practice and changes in first-aid guidelines.
  • Conduct scenario-based exercises reflecting real workplace incidents to improve readiness and competence.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this First Aid at Work Requalification course, participants will be able to:
  • Describe key first-aid-related health & safety regulations and their responsibilities as a workplace first aider.
  • Perform adult CPR and recovery position, and respond to choking safely and effectively.
  • Recognise and respond to workplace medical emergencies (such as fainting, stroke, seizures, allergic reactions, chest pain, low blood sugar).
  • Provide first aid for injuries and trauma including bleeding, burns, fractures, head/spinal injuries, eye injuries.
  • Manage other first-aid emergencies such as shock and poisoning until professional help arrives.
  • Apply updated first-aid skills within realistic workplace scenarios and feel confident to act as the designated first aider.

The First Aid at Work course runs over two full working days (approx. 6 hours including breaks per day).

To ensure effective first-aid hands-on training, we recommend a maximum of 12 delegates per session.

Yes. The certificate issued on completion is valid for three years.

Before expiry, delegates must attend this first-aid requalification course to maintain certified status and meet HSE standards.

Annual shorter refresher sessions are also recommended to keep skills current.

This course covers all the key areas of the 3-day FAW course in condensed form, including: adult resuscitation (CPR), choking, defibrillator theory, head/spinal injuries, burns, bleeding, asthma, allergic reactions, shock, poisoning, and many more first-aid emergencies.

It is designed specifically for individuals who already hold a valid FAW certificate and act as first aiders in medium- to high-risk workplaces—such as manufacturing, construction, offices and logistics environments.

Candidates whose first language is not English are welcome to attend. However, all courses are conducted, assessed/marked and certificated in English.

To successfully complete the course, candidates must have a sufficient level of English to:

  • Undertake the course requirements
  • Understand the course they are registered for
  • Recognise the purpose of undertaking it

For candidates whose first language is not English, the use of a bilingual dictionary in book form (not electronic or translator devices) is permitted during assessment.

Yes. CITB-registered employers may be able to claim a CITB funding to help cover the cost of the First Aid at Work training.

Yes. On successful completion of the course, delegates receive a certificate recognising their renewed status as a workplace first aider under HSE regulations.

Yes. This First Aid at Work training is fully accredited by CITB ATO WSS Certification and meets the standards of the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981.

The first-aid requalification certificate is valid for three years from the date of issue. Delegates must complete this renewal course before expiry to maintain validity.
