Learning Outcomes

Here is a brief overview of the content of training.
  • Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operator
  • Be able to conform to manufacturers requirements as per technical data, conform to relevant regulations and legislation
  • Be able to locate, identify and explain safe working loads, lifting capacity chart and explain different lifting configurations and working ranges
  • Identify and explain different lifting procedures, explain what task could fall into each category
  • Identify and explain centres of gravity, calculate estimated weights of loads
  • Identify any overhead / proximity hazards
  • Be able to agree the signal codes / hand signals, direction of movement, safe working and safe landing, placement zone with the slinger / signaller
  • Ensure excavator is in a safe condition for attachments to be fitted
  • Checked load integrity and security by carrying out trial lift
  • Be able to lift and move a load to a designated position in a safe and controlled manner ensuring minimum uncontrolled movement
  • Environmental considerations
  • Carry out all of service and securing procedures

Please note: There is a cap on how many times an employer can claim a short-duration course achievement grant. Check the CITB website for information on the number of claims allowed based on your last levy return.

If a candidate has been granted a grant for a particular course in their lifetime, they will not be eligible for grant again for the same course unless it has specific refresher standards published on the short-duration course register.

If refresher course standards do exist for a particular course, then only one refresher course is eligible in a lifetime for each candidate.

This highly interactive practical and classroom-based training course concludes with practical assessment and theory tests, demonstrating the candidate’s full understanding of the training.
Novice Operator: 1–5 Days, maximum of 3 candidates

Experienced Operator: 1 Day test only, maximum of 6 candidates

Location: Nationwide Delivery on-site
Participants should have prior experience operating excavators and a recognised Operators card. A basic understanding of lifting operations and health and safety regulations is also beneficial but not mandatory.
The assessment typically includes a written test to evaluate theoretical knowledge and a practical test to assess the participant's ability to perform lifting operations using an excavator.
Participants can prepare by reviewing the basics of excavator operation, familiarising themselves with lifting operations, and studying relevant health and safety regulations.

For entrants that wish to apply for the NPORS Traditional Card, there is no requirement to have an NVQ qualification. If the ‘HS&E TESTED Logo’ is required on the card, entrants must ensure they have attended and passed the CITB Operatives Health, Safety and Environment Test within the two years prior to application for the card and will have to achieve, within 2 years, the relevant NVQ.
