This course is designed for individuals aged 16 or older who work in low-risk workplace environments such as offices, retail or hospitality settings and require a foundational workplace first aid qualification.

It is ideal for the person designated to provide emergency first aid in such environments.

Meets the requirements of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for “emergency first aid at work” in low-risk workplaces.

Emergency First Aid At Work Course Aims

The aim of this Emergency First Aid at Work course is to provide delegates with the knowledge, practical skills and confidence to act as an emergency first aider in a low-risk workplace environment. Specifically, to:
  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider under the HSE regulations for first aid at work.
  • Perform adult CPR and place a casualty in the recovery position.
  • Recognise and respond to choking, unresponsive casualty, severe bleeding, burns, shock and seizures.
  • Communicate with a casualty, manage the scene, and hand over to emergency services.
  • Build confidence in acting quickly in workplace first aid emergency situations.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this Emergency First Aid at Work course, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the role of the workplace first aider and summarise the HSE’s first aid at work requirements in low-risk settings.
  • Administer adult CPR, apply the recovery position, and manage choking in a casualty.
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to emergencies such as fainting, seizures, bleeding, burns, shock or unresponsive adult.
  • Identify when to call for professional medical help, and provide vital first aid until help arrives.
  • Apply their first aid skills practically through scenario-based exercises and reflect on the workplace first aid preparedness.

This course is a one-day in-person first aid training session.

Absolutely. We offer nationwide in-house delivery for group bookings and can even help arrange a local venue if needed. Travel costs may apply depending on location.

The Emergency First Aid at Work is one full working day (approx. 6 hours including breaks).

To maintain quality and hands-on first aid experience, the recommended maximum is around 12 delegates per session.

Yes. The Emergency First Aid at Work certificate is valid for three years from the date of issue. After that time, delegates should retake the emergency first aid course to stay certified. Annual refresher sessions are also recommended to keep first aid skills fresh.

The course covers essential first aid topics for low-risk workplaces, including: the role of the first aider, adult resuscitation (CPR), choking, minor & severe bleeding, burns and scalds, shock, seizures, unresponsive casualty, casualty communication and first aid scene management.

This course is suitable for nominated first aiders working in low-risk environments (e.g., small offices, retail, hospitality) who need a cost-effective emergency first aid qualification.

Candidates whose first language is not English are welcome to attend. However, all courses are conducted, assessed/marked and certificated in English.

To successfully complete the course, candidates must have a sufficient level of English to:

  • Undertake the course requirements
  • Understand the course they are registered for
  • Recognise the purpose of undertaking it

For candidates whose first language is not English, the use of a bilingual dictionary in book form (not electronic or translator devices) is permitted during assessment.

Yes. CITB-registered employers may be able to claim a CITB funding to help cover the cost of the First Aid at Work training.

Yes. On successful completion of this course, delegates will receive a HSE-compliant Emergency First Aid at Work certificate valid for three years.

Yes. This Emergency First Aid at Work training is fully accredited by CITB ATO WSS Certification and meets the standards of the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981.

The certificate is valid for three years from the date of issue. Delegates will need to retake this emergency first aid course once it expires to maintain certified status.
