  • Name and explain the purpose of principle plant components, the basic construction, controls and terminology
  • Conform with manufacturers requirements as per the operators handbook, other types of information source and relevant regulations and legislation
  • Undertake all pre-use plant checks
  • Configure and set for site travel
  • Travel over rough, undulating ground, substantial inclines and level surfaces
  • Manoeuvre the plant equipment in confined spaces
  • Configure and set for excavating duties
  • Explain actions required for hazards, underground and overhead services
  • Construct ramps and form and shape stockpiles
  • Grade, spread and level ground and materials
  • Carry out plant equipment shut down and securing procedures
  • Explain the loading and unloading procedures for machine transporting

If a candidate has been granted a grant for a particular course in their lifetime, they will not be eligible for grant again for the same course unless it has specific refresher standards published on the short-duration course register.

If refresher course standards do exist for a particular course, then only one refresher course is eligible in a lifetime for each candidate.

There are no formal prerequisites for the course, but it is beneficial if candidates have some basic understanding of construction machinery and health and safety regulations.
The course typically includes a combination of classroom-based theory and hands-on practical training.
The course is assessed through a combination of practical tests and a theory examination. Candidates must demonstrate their ability to operate the machinery safely and effectively, as well as their understanding of health and safety regulations.
Candidates should bring personal protective equipment (PPE), such as a hard hat, safety boots, high-visibility clothing, and gloves. It is also recommended to bring a notepad and pen for taking notes during the theoretical sessions.

To achieve the Red CPCS Trained Operator Card, candidates must pass both the CSCS touch screen H+S test (within the last 2 years) and the CPCS Theory Test and the Practical Test.
