  • Identify the basic construction, purpose and function of components and the purpose and use of controls and gauges
  • Identify and comply with manufacturers’ instructions in accordance with the operator’s handbook, other information sources and applicable legislation
  • Carry out pre-checks
  • Ensure the mast climber is sited and erected
  • Keep within safe working parameters
  • Place the plant machinery in an out-of-service condition
  • Prepare the platform to accept various loads
  • Raise and lower platform up to maximum working height in a loaded and unloaded state

If a candidate has been granted a grant for a particular course in their lifetime, they will not be eligible for grant again for the same course unless it has specific refresher standards published on the short-duration course register.

If refresher course standards do exist for a particular course, then only one refresher course is eligible in a lifetime for each candidate.

Participants should have a basic understanding of the construction industry and be at least 18 years old. It is beneficial to have some prior experience operating plant machinery, although it is not mandatory.
The course includes a mix of classroom-based theoretical instruction and hands-on practical training. Participants will also undergo an assessment to evaluate their competence in operating mast climbers.
Reviewing relevant health and safety regulations, familiarising yourself with mast climber equipment, and studying the CPCS technical test theory can be beneficial. Some training providers may also offer pre-course materials to help you prepare.
Participants should bring appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment), such as a hard hat, safety boots, and high-visibility clothing.

To achieve the Red CPCS Trained Operator Card, candidates must pass both the CSCS touch screen H+S test (within the last 2 years) and the CPCS Theory Test and the Practical Test.
