Course Information

The CPCS A22 Track Loading Shovel course is a training programme designed to provide operators with the knowledge and skills required to safely and efficiently operate a track loading shovel.

The course is intended for individuals who will be operating a track-loading shovel in a construction or industrial environment. This includes both new operators and those who need to refresh their skills or obtain a CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) certification.

The CPCS Track Loading Shovel course aims to provide thorough practical and theoretical plant training in operating a tracked loading shovel and to enable the candidate to competently and safely carry out the role and pass the CPCS Theory and Practical Tests.

Learning Outcomes

Here is a brief overview of the content of training.
  • Name and explain the purpose of principle components, the basic construction, controls and terminology
  • Conform with manufacturers requirements as per the operators handbook, other types of information source and relevant plant regulations and legislation
  • Undertake all pre-use checks
  • Configure and set for site and highway travel
  • Travel over rough, undulating ground, substantial inclines and level surfaces; laden and unladen
  • Manoeuverer relevant plant in confined spaces
  • Configure and set for extraction and loading duties
  • Explain actions required for hazards, underground and overhead services
  • Extract differing types of materials from stockpiles and other sources
  • Form stockpiles of segregated materials and construct (temporary) ramps
  • Sort and place materials into transporting vehicles and hoppers
  • Spread and level ground and materials
  • Carry out shut down and securing procedures
  • Explain the loading and unloading procedures for machine transporting

Please note: There is a cap on how many times an employer can claim a short-duration course achievement grant. Check the CITB website for information on the number of claims allowed based on your last levy return.

If a candidate has been granted a grant for a particular course in their lifetime, they will not be eligible for grant again for the same course unless it has specific refresher standards published on the short-duration course register.

If refresher course standards do exist for a particular course, then only one refresher course is eligible in a lifetime for each candidate.

Upon obtaining the certification, operators can pursue various roles in the construction industry, including working for construction companies, plant hire firms, and infrastructure projects.

To achieve the Red CPCS Trained Operator Card, candidates must pass both the CSCS touch screen H+S test (within the last 2 years) and the CPCS Theory Test and the Practical Test.
