The New Roads and Street Works Act requires that anyone who executes, works for, or on behalf of a utility company, is qualified for the activities being carried out. Any street works site must have at least one qualified Operative on site at all times during the works and the site must have a qualified Supervisor appointed to the site who can oversee the works.

This course is suitable for those who carry out excavation, backfill and reinstatement in footpaths and highways using various materials

NRSWA Operative Course Content
Unit 001 – Location and avoidance of underground apparatus
Unit 002 – Signing, lighting and guarding units
Unit 003 – Excavation in the road/highway
Unit 004 – Reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials
Unit 005 – Reinstatement of sub-base and road-base in non-bituminous materials
Unit 006 – Reinstatement of cold-lay bituminous materials
Unit 007 – Reinstatement of hot-lay bituminous materials
Unit 009 – Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways
There are two “key certificates” for operatives; Location & avoidance of underground apparatus; and Signing, lighting and guarding, as long as you hold the key certificates, you can choose to hold as many or as few of the other units to suit the work that you do.
Common combination of units for operatives:
Units 1 – 6 & 9 or;
Units 1 – 7 & 9 (This includes Hotlay Tarmac)

NRSWA Operative Course Certification:
This is a nationally recognised qualification which is valid for a period of 5 years and a 2 day re-assessment is required prior to the expiry of the card issued upon successful completion of the original course.
