Event Recap: Engaging with Future Talent at the Action For Construction Event

April 23, 2024

We are delighted to share our excitement following our participation in the recent Action For Construction Careers Event held on the 17th of April 2024 at the Bentinck Miners Welfare in Kirkby-in-Ashfield for young learners. The event proved to be a truly eventful and enriching experience for us, as we had the opportunity to engage with numerous pupils from various schools who showed remarkable enthusiasm and interest in the construction industry.

The atmosphere at the event was buzzing with excitement as kids from different backgrounds eagerly explored our demonstrations. Among the highlights were our demos featuring a 360 excavator, forward tipping dumper, abrasive wheel, face fit testing, and a joint demo with CR Civil Engineering featuring the cat and genny equipment.

360 Excavator and Forward Tipping Dumper Demos

We would like to give a big shout out to CR Civil Engineering for donating the the machines for the day to allow these demonstrations to take place. The 360 Excavator and Forward Tipping Dumper demos, led by Mark, provided attendees with a hands-on experience of operating heavy machinery commonly used in construction projects. From manoeuvring the 360 excavator to understanding the functionality of the forward tipping dumper, our young participants gained valuable insights into the operation of these essential equipment.

Abrasive Wheel and Face Fit Testing Demos

The abrasive wheel demo, led by Sean, focused on safety and proper handling techniques when using abrasive wheels in construction tasks. Attendees had the opportunity to learn about the importance of selecting the right wheel for specific applications and following safety protocols to prevent accidents. After the abrasive wheel demo, Sean led our young learners to the Face Fit Testing demo area, where they learn about the crucial aspect of ensuring respiratory protection for workers in construction. Our demo emphasised the significance of proper fitting respirators to safeguard against airborne hazards present on construction sites.

Cat And Genny Demo

The cat and genny demo, led by CR Civil Engineering, aimed to raise awareness about the importance of safe digging practices to avoid underground utility strikes. Participants learned how to use cable avoidance tools effectively to locate buried services and prevent costly damages and potential hazards.

In addition to our demonstrations, fellow industry stakeholders also showcased their expertise through a variety of demos.

  1. Lindum was conducting Surveying and Setting out, illustrating the critical role of accurate measurement and planning in construction projects.
  2. West Notts College showcased Bricklaying skills, providing insight into the craftsmanship involved in building structures from bricks.
  3. Total Reclaims Demolition / National Demolition Training Group offered a 360 Excavator and demolition simulator, giving participants a virtual experience of demolition work and heavy machinery operation.
  4. Wilmott Dixon demonstrated Tetredron, showcasing innovative construction methods and materials.
  5. Stepnell engaged participants with Lego, demonstrating teamwork and creativity in construction projects.
  6. Box Construction provided insights into their construction projects and methodologies.
  7. Clegg demonstrated risk assessment, highlighting the importance of safety in construction practices.
  8. Drury showcased a Roofing Rig, offering insight into roofing techniques and equipment.
  9. Tilbury presented “A Day in Your Life,” offering participants a glimpse into the daily life of construction professionals.

These diverse demonstrations provided attendees with a comprehensive overview of various aspects of the construction industry, from practical skills to innovative technologies and safety practices.
